Challenge

In the food industry, the demand for energy-efficient and sustainable production processes is steadily increasing. During the baking of cookies, large amounts of residual heat are released through the flue gas exhaust of industrial ovens. This heat was previously lost, while energy was simultaneously required for other production processes, such as melting chocolate. The challenge was to utilize this residual heat effectively, thereby reducing energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.

Objective

The objective of the project was to implement an efficient and sustainable flue gas exhaust system for the ovens, allowing the released heat to be reused within the production process. Using a heat recovery unit, the residual heat was to be repurposed for melting chocolate, optimizing energy consumption and better integrating the overall process.

Execution

OBS Techniek was responsible for the installation and integration of the new flue gas exhaust ducts and the heat recovery system. The scope of work included, among other tasks:

  • Flue gas exhaust: < 0 > installation of new flue gas exhaust ducts for industrial furnaces, designed for safe and efficient combustion gas exhaust.

  • Heat recovery: < 0 > installation and connection of a heat recovery unit that recovers residual heat from the flue gases.

  • Procesintegratie: koppeling van het warmteterugwinsysteem aan het chocolade-smeltproces, zodat vrijgekomen warmte direct wordt ingezet binnen de productie.

Result

The project resulted in the implementation of an efficient and sustainable flue gas exhaust system for the ovens, in which the released heat is effectively recovered and reused within the production process. By implementing a heat recovery unit, the residual heat is utilized for melting chocolate, significantly reducing primary energy consumption.

As a result, the various process steps are better integrated, forming a cohesive and energy-efficient system. The installation contributes to lower energy demand, a more sustainable production process, and improved operational performance.
