Automated cultivation process for the Vertical farm in Boston USA

Issue
The growing global demand for sustainably and efficiently produced food creates the need to produce more with less space. Vertical farming offers a solution by growing crops vertically rather than horizontally. OBS Techniek was involved in an innovative vertical farming project in Boston for Van Leeuwen Techniek, where lettuce needed to be fully automated in a three-story building.

Objective
The project’s objective was to achieve a fully automated lettuce cultivation process, from seed to finished product. Using vertical cultivation in racks, each growth stage had to be given a fixed position, allowing products to be moved efficiently and reliably between levels. The system had to be space-saving, scalable, and suitable for continuous production.

Implementation
OBS Techniek was responsible for installing the building’s internal transport systems. The work included:

  • Mechanical supervision: assembly and installation of several lifts that provided the vertical transport of crates between the different floors.
  • Mechanical installation: installation of conveyor belts, partly suspended from the ceiling, for horizontally moving crates of products between the different growth phases.
  • Interne logistiek: integratie van het transportsysteem binnen het geautomatiseerde teeltproces, waarbij producten efficiënt en gecontroleerd door de verschillende groeistadia worden verplaatst.
