Challenge

With the growing global demand for sustainably and efficiently produced food, there is an increasing need to produce more using less space. Vertical farming offers a solution by cultivating crops not horizontally, but vertically. OBS Techniek was involved in an innovative vertical farming project in Boston for Van Leeuwen Techniek, where lettuce had to be produced fully automatically in a three-story building.

Objective

The objective of the project was to implement a fully automated cultivation process for heads of lettuce, from seed to finished product. Using vertical growing racks, each growth stage was assigned a fixed position, allowing products to be moved efficiently and reliably between floors. The system needed to be space-saving, scalable, and suitable for continuous production.

Execution

OBS Techniek was responsible for the installation of the internal transport systems within the building. The scope of work included, among other tasks:

  • Mechanical supervision: assembly and installation of several lifts that provided the vertical transport of crates between the different floors.

  • Mechanical installation: installation of conveyor belts, partly suspended from the ceiling, for horizontally moving crates of products between the different growth phases.

  • Internal logistics: Integration of the transport system within the automated cultivation process, enabling products to be moved efficiently and in a controlled manner through the various growth stages.

Result

The project resulted in the successful implementation of a fully automated cultivation system for heads of lettuce, in which the entire process—from seed to finished product—operates without manual intervention. By using vertical growing racks, each growth stage was assigned a fixed, logically arranged position within the system.

Products are moved efficiently and reliably between the different floors, ensuring a continuous and streamlined production process. The implemented system is compact and space-saving, easily scalable to larger production volumes, and suitable for stable, continuous cultivation. This results in consistent product quality with a high level of process reliability and operational efficiency.
